WordPress 5.5 is released, and it comes with more amazing features and security. This will be the second major WordPress Release of 2020, and it comes packed with many new features and improvements as well as security.

These days, we are used to seeing many additions to the block editor at each WordPress release. WordPress 5.5 also added some new features and improvements in the block editor.

In this article, we will show you what’s coming in WordPress 5.5 with features and screenshots.

What’s New Features In Block Editor (Major WordPress Release)

Once again, the latest WordPress release packs a long list of exciting new features for the block editor. For example:

Block patterns (UI Improvements )

New block UI design patterns make it simple and fun to create complex, beautiful layouts, using combinations of text and media that you can mix and match to fit your story.

You will also find block patterns in a wide variety of plugins and themes, with more added all the time. Pick any of them from a single place — just click and go!

Inline image editing

Crop, rotate, and zoom your photos right from the image block. If you spend a lot of time on images, this could save you hours!

The New Block Directory

Now it’s easier than ever to find the block you need. The new block directory is built right into the block editor, so you can install new block types to your site without ever leaving the editor.

Auto Updates for WordPress Plugins & Themes

Now you can set plugins and themes to update automatically — or not! — in the WordPress admin. So you always know your site is running the latest code available.

You can also turn auto-updates on or off for each plugin or theme you have installed — all on the same screens you’ve always used.

Update by uploading ZIP files

If updating plugins and themes manually is your thing, now that’s easier too — just upload a ZIP file.

Lazy Load Images in WordPress Release 5.5

Posts and pages feel faster, thanks to lazy-loaded images.

Images give your story a lot of impact, but they can sometimes make your site seem slow.

In WordPress 5.5, images wait to load until they’re just about to scroll into view. The technical term is ‘lazy loading’.

On mobile, lazy loading can also keep browsers from loading files meant for other devices. That can save your readers money on data — and help preserve battery life.

Update Themes and Plugins with a Zip File

Sometimes WordPress plugin or theme updates may not work as expected in which case you have to manually update a theme or plugin. Currently, you can do that by using an FTP client.

WordPress 5.5 will allow you to do that inside the WordPress dashboard. You’ll be able to go to Plugins » Add New page and click on the Upload button.

Now go ahead and upload the zip file you downloaded for the plugin update. WordPress will automatically detect that this plugin is already installed and give you an option to ‘Replace current with uploaded’.

Similarly, you can also install updates for WordPress themes. Simply go to Appearance » Themes page and click on the ‘Add New’ button. After that click on the Upload Theme button to upload your theme zip file.

WordPress Performance and Speed

In this update, you will see lazy loading, WordPress Themes & Plugins auto-update features and more. So you no need to use this by other plugins. WordPress 5.5 comes with default lazy-loading feature, so the posts and pages load faster.
